Freeport No Longer Export Crude Ore in 2014
Jakarta, GEO ENERGI – PT Freeport Indonesia signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PT Indosmelt and PT Indovasi Mineral Indonesia to construct ore processing and purification smelting plant, in Jakarta, Tuesday (August 13, 2013).
The signing was witnessed by the government’s representation, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry's Mineral Director Dede I Suhendra saying the concentrate of Freeport’s copper that has reached 95 percent, but what has been mandated in Mineral and Coal Law is a 100 percent purification product.
Dede asserted that the government had given dispensation for preparation for two years since the law was first published. “There will be no more crude ore export in 2014,” he said.
Dede assured that the state would not suffer loss if the smelting product is not entirely absorbed in domestic market. He called it as a delayed benefit for the product can be stored. He added, downstream activities are not only being the responsible of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) but also the whole stakeholders’. “Ministry of Industry is currently making a roadmap for product utilization in the downstream. We also asked an independent team, Baltibang ESDM to give advice to the government,” he said.
